In recent years, restaurants specializing in gourmet hamburgers have proliferated in Victoria. First, Pink Bicycle came on the scene (to much fanfare). Later, Big Wheel Burger and Bin 4 Burger Lounge appeared. Each of these restaurants has a cadre of ardent fans. Here at Horsing Around, we favor the Bike.
If you have a hankering for hamburger, look no further than Pink Bicycle
The menu at Pink Bicycle is straightforward. It is comprised of a selection of burgers, salads and sides (but oh, what salads and sides!). Vegetarians aren’t given short shrift as there are not one, but THREE meatless burgers to choose from: date infused Moroccan garbanzo burger, black bean burger with smoked cheddar and roasted jalapeno mayo, and finally, a meaty portabello burger with tamari almond goat cheese. Adventurous foodies can hoover down the Metchosin Mutton (trust us, it tastes much better than it sounds – lamb lovers will swoon!), or a lean bison burger. If you are a burger purist, and only beef will do, go for the classic hamburger, the Pink Bike Cheese burger. If you want something a little lighter, try the ahi-tuna burger, which is topped by a delicious gingery slaw with crunchy toasty sesame seeds. All the burgers at Pink Bicycle are served on a Bond Bond’s sesame bun. This is a good choice, as a bun can make or break a burger. Bon Bon’s buns are sturdy enough to hold the meat, but soft enough to be toothsome and tasty.
Pink Bicycle’s sides are a treat in and of themselves, and the great thing is you have ample choice and flexibility. You can accompany your burger with pear and spinach salad with candied pecans (quite a switch from the wilted salad in a bag greens you get at many restaurants), truffle fries (hand-cut), roast garlic caeser salad, beet salad with arugula or house made Blue Buck beer battered onion rings. We adore the poutine, which is topped with rosemary-flecked gravy, squeaky cheese curds and crispy shallots (and yes, you can have poutine as a side with your burger). Pink Bicycle offers a great selection of local beers to accompany your burger feast.
Desserts change throughout the week. On past visits to the restaurant we have enjoyed the pink lemonade cheesecake and homemade bourbon chocolate ice cream. All dishes from the appies to the desserts are handmade daily. Service at Pink Bicycle is prompt and friendly. This restaurant is small but cheerfully appointed (think cozy, not claustrophobic). If you have a hankering for hamburger, look no further than Pink Bicycle. Bon Appetit!
