Green Leaf Vietnamese Bistro
The Green Leaf Bistro is a cheerful Vietnamese eatery located across from “The Hudson”, home of the Victoria Public Market on Douglas Street. It is one of three terrific restaurants lined neatly in a row in a part of town that is otherwise a wasteland of fast food joints and crummy chain stores.
Here you can sit down in front of a sun drenched window and sip tea while you peruse the extensive menu. Start with a salad roll with pork and shrimp or maybe partake in an order of deep fried crispy tofu (Green Leaf has lots of options for vegetarians). Ask for vermicelli with lemongrass chicken and onions and shortly after you’ll be served a pile of perfectly cooked, tender crisp veggies and juicy chicken on a mound of gossamer thin, delicate rice noodles. At only $10.25 for a plate that could feed 2-3, this is an enormous bargain. Jazz up your noodles with the condiments on hand – a dollop of licorice salty sweet hoisin sauce or a drizzle of chili oil. This is the fun part of eating Vietnamese; you can doctor your food to your particular liking.
FYI: the Vietnamese consider plunking a bill down on your table to be rude. They don’t want you to feel rushed. When you are ready to pay, go directly to the till and they will ring in your purchase.
